Review: The Lost Knight by Candy Atkins

How am I supposed to save the world when I'm not strong, not brave, not smart, and not particularly good at most things?

I ran away from home the day after my thirteenth birthday when Auntie and her weird friend attacked me. Now I'm on the run with the Grim Reaper and a scary soldier. And I'm no longer on Earth.
They were expecting me to be a Knight. The savior that's supposed to stop a war and prevent the invasion to Earth. But I'm not. They grabbed the wrong girl. I just don’t know how to tell them.

The Lost Knight by Candy Atkins may be my newest series addiction. This first person narrative follows 13 year old Agatha Stone and she journeys to another realm to find out who she truly is…A knight. The young girl has lived with uncaring foster parents for as long as she can remember and on her 13 birthday her life changes. Rescued by a knight crawler, she is taken to a magical realm where she will learn about her parents and the life she was meant to have.

I know, this sounds very familiar to another Y.A. novel series and, well, it has its strong similarities.  I was waiting for “You’re a Knight, Aggie.” But that didn’t happen. This story has magic, fairies, elves and a whole range of magical creatures. Each land has its own language, and set of rules. Atkins has created a wonderful realm full of color and imagination that is unique to her story. I want to live here and have conversations with trees and ride an orange unicorn. Oh yeah. Horses of many colors. Nice nod to OZ.

So why is it my new fav? Well, for one, as a mom I was quickly engaged in this young girl’s story. I want to take care of her. She is about the same age as my own daughter. There are some life lessons in here that every female will or has gone thru. There is a scene where Agatha has to “find herself.” This scene was well written, I laughed and cried. Taking “talking to yourself” to a whole new level. I am excited to have my daughter read this and to be able to share and talk about this with as I have with other books.

For all you Potterheads or H.P. geeks, how can you not fall in love with this story and appreciate the fact that it is a female lead.
